Here are 5 tips on how to handle Rain on Photo Session day
1.RESCHEDULE
As a photographer, I know I obsess over checking the weather as I am leading up to a photo shoot. I like to know what to expect so I can try and reschedule if that is an option.
The great thing about a portrait session versus a wedding is that you can generally be flexible in rescheduling. However, rescheduling is not always possible. The very least, be vigilant about checking the weather. You can follow my next 4 steps to be totally prepared for the rain.
2. BRING UMBRELLAS
Not just any umbrellas though. I highly recommend clear umbrellas because they are so beautiful in pictures, and really elevate your shot when used as a prop.
I have never had a shoot go wrong when we used umbrellas, and oftentimes, they have turned out to be some of my favorite shoots.
In addiction, if there are kids in the shoot, they have an absolute blast with the umbrellas, which makes for the most adorable shots.
3. RELOCATE
If you know rain is coming and rescheduling isn’t an option, at least relocate your shoot to a location.
Find a spot that has a pretty gazebo, a beautiful building, sometimes there isn’t rain in another location.
Even sometimes, I have even found some really cool parking garages that give a more industrial, modern feel to the photoshoot that has turned out beautiful.
4. GO INDOORS
I know the shoot is usually a beautiful outdoor location, but let’s not forget that a lifestyle session in a client’s home can be so gorgeous and intimate.
Photographing in a family’s home because I feel like I am capturing them in their genuine life where they make real memories.
Clients also love photographing in their homes because it is just another keepsake memory for them for years later when perhaps they have moved.
5. GO FOR IT
Just embrace the rain and go for it! A little rain never hurts anybody and who doesn’t have fun playing in the rain?
I guarantee a photoshoot where a family is dancing in the rain, splashing each other, and playing together in the rain will be their best photoshoot ever.
Capture memories that a family will never forget. I am confident these will be some of your best and most unique photos yet.
