COLORS
During the fall season I know we tend to gravitate toward darker colors and jewel tones. I love the jewel tones and think they are gorgeous colors. However, I recommend balancing them out with neutrals as much as possible. I find that bold colors and prints tend to take away from the focus of the image and can create color casts on your skin that are difficult to remove. For an easy rule choose one rich color and make it the accent color that goes with your neutrals.

TEXTURE
One great way to add dimension to your fall family mini session is to add texture. Have a member of your family wear a knit sweater or a cardigan. It is a great way to add texture to the photo. Another way to add depth and texture to your picture is layering. Think about adding pullovers, cardigans, long sleeve shirts under overalls, and scarves. I can’t emphasize accessorizing enough!

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
When deciding on outfits, think about color “families” and try to keep everyone in cool tones (more blue and grey) or warm tones (camel, sage green, blush, off white, etc). By focusing on one color family for your outfits all of the separate clothing items are able to come together more cohesively.

HOW TO START
To start the outfit selection process for your fall family sessions, I like to start with one article of clothing that I love. For example, maybe there is a little girl’s pink romper dress that you love. Start there, think about what colors would go good with the item you chose first (in this case the pink romper), and gather other items from there. After you have all the basics for each person think about you can add accessories or add layers to the photo. Remember your photographer is your friend and would love to help you with any questions or concerns you might have.

One last thing to consider is the colors within your own home and how the photos will look on your wall. If your home has a warmer color palette then choose outfits with a warm tone.
